July-Oct
Redroot (Ceanothus velutinus), also known as snowbrush or tobacco brush, is well adapted to fire ecology and often becomes one of the first shrubs to regenerate after wildfire. Known for its light reddish-pink inner root bark and resinous aroma, the root has a long history of traditional herbal use and is commonly prepared as tinctures, decoctions, and herbal extracts.
Growing in dry mountain forests and high elevation landscapes, the leaves are coated with a sticky aromatic resin that gives the plant its characteristic scent. We harvest these dense woody roots by hand — and all of our body weight — using a 6-foot digging bar to pry them from the dry rocky soil where they grow. Harvested sustainably in abundant wild areas.
